Weekend Scenester Picks: Hollows, Hidden Pictures, Bastille Day, and Woody Guthrie's Birthday
Readers, if you're like us you are either too poor and/or too unhip to sweat it out with the scenesters in Chicago at this weekend's Pitchfork Music Fest.
So what should you do in LFK (and its environs) this weekend.
Kick off the festivities tonight in KC with Thee Swank Bastards at the Record Bar. They know more dick jokes than Chip. Read our interview with those Bastards over here .
If you prefer your female-fronted rock shows to be a little rougher around the edges than this week's coma-inducing Beach House show (not to mention $17 dollars cheaper), check out Chicago's Hollows at the Replay on Saturday (with Dry Bonnet). Surely this blurb from their website will convince you:
"Imagine The Go Go’s and The Black Lips hanging out in an old dingy tattoo parlor, getting trashed off of Old Grand-Dad and deciding to start a band."
Here's a cute photo of Hollows:
Earlier on Saturday evening, local yokels from Midday Ramblers, MAW, Drakkar Sauna, and other bands will be celebrating Woody Guthrie's birthday in the newest installment of the 940 Live series at the Lawrence Arts Center. If Drakkar kicks half as much ass on Woody's tunes as they do on Louvin Brothers songs, you're in for a treat.
And, even earlier in the day, you should probably start drinking with the Francophiles (and actual French people) at the Pig's annual Bastille Day celebration.
On Sunday, our friends in Hidden Pictures are celebrating the release of their new album, Rainbow Records, at the matinee show along with Shadow Paint and Lonnie Fisher. We did a fun interview with Hidden Pictures way back in March: check it out here . And snag the new record via Golden Sounds' site right here .
Chip: "Will Lonnie Fisher be cooking fried chicken at this show or won't he?"
Just look at these adorable kids, won't you!
