Final Halloween Picks: Amazing Feats of Loneliness, Sluts Getting Groovy, Obligatory Cover Bands, ASSJAMZ, and More!

Card Table's big and bold new production of Edward Gant's Amazing Feats of Loneliness enters the second weekend of its run at the Arts Center.  With the World Series over, you've got fewer excuses now.  Go check it out.

For many scenesters, it's not Halloween unless you hit the Replay.  This year's selection of cover bands includes LAZY playing Gun Club tunes, some Mouthbreathers playing Mummies tunes, and Brownbackistan, a Dead Kennedys cover band.  Too bad no one can be bothered to make a flyer (that we can find).

The Bottleneck is terrible on Twitter these days, but their Halloween show does have a cool poster, and we dig the Cowgirls' Train Set folks, so we'll promote it.  Hell, we may even attend. We've been wanting to catch the revamped Ants.

The Sluts and Many Moods of Dad will play early sets at Love Garden tomorrow.  No flyer here either, but the description via the FB event page is pretty great:

Hey Yo Tramps, Thieves + Dirty Nurses:

The Sluts are turning out a unique set of their more groovy songs as a tribute to the devil, and MMOD is dropping an LP to cap the night off. On top of that, Ryan Wise of the Sluts is gonna spin some LPs to kick the night off right!

7pm: Ryan "Slutty Adams Family" Wise spins LPs.
8pm: The Sluts - Halloween set of Smooth Groovers

8:45: Many Moods of Dad - LP Release Show

Or maybe you're in the mood for Halloween boobies?  Head to Liberty Hall. Details here via FB.

And last but certainly not least: a Halloween ASSJAMZ at the Granada for all you sexy guys and ghouls to shake your costumed asses!

Halloween Picks, Vol. 3 (Final Friday Edition): Wonder Fair's "Frank and Stein Inc" and a Halloween Bash at Lawrence Creates

Our pals at Wonder Fair can always be counted on to do weird and spooky things for Halloween. This year's "haunted installation" (following on the heels of Cemetery Cinema and Dead End Diner) is called Frank & Stein Inc. Hours are 7:00 to 11:00.  Visit the FB event page here.  Frank & Stein Inc also has its own unusual website here.

Lawrence Creates Makerspace has a Halloween bash planned with a costume party and music.

And most of the other venues don't seem to realize it's Halloween!  Lame.

Halloween Picks, Vol. II: Shtick or Treat with the Harpoon Presents Gang at Replay and a Special Halloween Comedy Freakout at Frank's

What are all the jokesters and jesters of LFK plotting and scheming for Halloween?

Let's take a look.

Thursday's "Good Time" at the Replay serves up a "Shtick or Treat" edition in which your favorite local comedians take on the persona of their favorite comedians.  Great idea!  Will Jay Maus smash some watermelons and make the Replay's floors even stickier than usual?  Weirdest choice:  Joe Noh as...Edward Furlong?  Here's the list of participants (if you can see 'em).  The FB event page is here.

And the Comedy Freakout crew is back at Frank's on Halloween night with "Chicago's finest satirists" Ian Abramson (The Onion) and Tim Barnes (Whiskey Journal), plus all your creepy local favorites!  In addition to the jokes, expect a costume contest, music from the Organ Loaners, and an appearance by "Don Pardo's ghost."  The FB event page is here and we're told the bash is upstairs this time (which is likely gonna  be quite interesting in a roomful of loud Halloween boozers!).

Spooky Pick of the Week, Vol. I: Phantom of the Paradise Screening Followed By Live Perfomances

Surely the most esoteric Halloween treat of the week is a screening of Brian De Palma's 1974 cult horror musical Phantom of the Paradise at the LAC on Thursday, followed by a live performance of the soundtrack featuring local musical luminaries Eric Mardis, Jeremy Sidener, Cameron Hawk, Michael Paull and Kliph Scurlock.  The FB event page is here.

Will you be there?

Weekend Picks: Tricks and Treats (and Jokes and Songs and Plays and Movies)

Well, the Replay is (as usual) killing it this weekend.

Tonight: comedy!  And we hear the Harpoon gang has something VERY special planned for NEXT week's pre-Halloween edition.

On Friday, the bar finally turns 21!  Yep, they've been serving you delicious PBR for 21 damn years. Go celebrate with the Hips and Gnarly Davidson and Approach.

And on Saturday the ever-popular (but always insufferably crowded) Fashion Monsters Fashion Show returns.  Go ogle the well-dressed guys and ghouls.

---

The resurgence of serious, ambitious theatre in LFK is a good thing.  Go support it by seeing Edward Gant's Amazing Feats of Loneliness at the LAC (a co-production of Card Table Theatre and the Arts Center). It runs for three weekends so excuses won't be accepted.  The FB event page is here.

And Film Church is back on Sunday with pre-Halloween screenings of Young Frankenstein.  Maggie's Film Church sermon is at the 4:00 screening.

Weird Royals Story of the Week: A Homeland Security Panty Raid!

Chip has been annoyed by the lack of titillating stories here lately, so today we're focusing on one of the more unusual tales to spring up around Royals-mania in KC:  a good old-fashioned panty raid conducted by no less than...the Dept. of Homeland Security!  What??

KC artist (and former Work of Art reality-show contestant) Peregrine Honig found her "Take the Crown" panties confiscated from Birdies, her lingerie boutique, because the design of the KC logo was deemed copyright infringement.

But why was Homeland Security involved?  We still don't really know. Read the Pitch version of the story here.

Chip: "Can we see a picture of the panties?

Sure, Chip.  Here's a pic from Birdies website.

Royals-Related Re-Arrangement of the Week: Hospital Ships at Love Garden in the Afternoon!

The World Series is creating all kinds of interesting scheduling havoc even here in LFK, with various events postponing or re-arranging so that fans can watch the Royals.   The City Fathers are meeting earlier than usual tonight to decide whether to close down a block of downtown New Hampshire for TWO YEARS to accommodate another apartment building construction project.  The Oread Hotel rescheduled a whiskey tasting (since when can't people watch baseball AND taste whiskey?).  And Love Garden shifted Wednesday's Hospital Ships homecoming show to 5:00 in the afternoon, giving scenesters an extra incentive to start drinking PBR earlier than usual.  Check out the FB event page for the Hospital Ships/The Dan Ryan World Series Pre-Gamer here.  And note that Shy Boys are no longer on the bill.  Presumably they're staying in KC to watch the Series.

Stuff We Life This Week: Local Celebrity Coffee Drinks; Boog-Style Politics; Royals and Sung Woo

Our friends at La Prima Tazza have a new monthly special: a drink inspired by a local celebrity.  Will Chip eventually get his own frothy beverage, perhaps one with a little boner carefully crafted into the foam?  Maybe (though probably it won't be exactly like that description). Keep an eye on Tazza's back-from-the-dead and very active Twitter account here. This month's Halloween-centric concoction is the "Bloody BARRR."  Here's BARRR drinking it.

We like that local political legend Boog had an army of fire-wielding hula hoopers helping him "Fire Up The Vote!" on Mass. this weekend.

And did you all hear that the Royals are in the damn WORLD SERIES??  We like it. And none other than @Koreanfan_KC is en route back to KC as we speak.  With Sung Woo on hand, the Royals will NOT lose.

Weekend Picks: Comedy, Rock, Benefits, and More

Well, the Royals are in the World Series!  What??  And how should you spend your time while waiting for the epic battle to commence?

Head to Replay tonight for comedy and stick around late for the sure-to-be-triumphant return of Psychic Heat.    We don't know who the comedians are, but they're surely funnier than SNL's Colin Jost, who is at the Lied Center tonight.  Plus, beer and tacos!  And why is the rock show billed as starting at 9:00 pm on the poster below.  Because we all know that ain't happening!!

Catch La Guerre at the Bottleneck on Friday but try not to cry because Cowboy Indian Bear has disbanded.  Those little cowboys, Indians, and bears have plenty of other projects to entertain you!

Upcoming La Guerre dates:

And Saturday brings the annual Friends of the League benefit in ELFK at the Makerspace.  It's always a good and usually very drunken evening.

Wednesday Day Drinking Pick: Royals!!

Even LFK has finally caught Royals-mania.  And we can't remember ever having a better reason to booze it up at 3:00 on a Wednesday October afternoon.  Or at least not since 85.  Will today be the day??

Instant-classic Moose-catch photo via KC-Star:

Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas went airborne to make a catch on a foul ball hit by Baltimore Orioles Adam Jones in the sixth inning Tuesday at ALCS playoff baseball game on October 13, 2014 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO.

Midweek Picks: Terror Tuesday, Royals, Nerds, and a Film Screening

The Royals are back after a rain out.  Where's your best Royals-watching bar?  We've sampled Burger Stand, Conroy's, and Gaslight for recent games.

Due to the Royals, the Terror Tuesday double-feature at Frank's has been reduced to one midnight screening:  Night of the Comet.   For those who were looking forward to Night of the Creeps, local jokester Peter Lyrene made a screencap of all the best parts. You can find it on the FB event page.

The Nerds are back on Wednesday but don't worry: the Royals afternoon game should be over by eight (depending on how many extra innings they inevitably play). Too bad the subjects aren't baseball-centric. But they ARE suitably spooky for an October Nerd Nite: "Mystery, Monsters, and Maggots." There's also a costume contest. The  FB event page is here.  But no official poster? Come on, nerds!

Liberty Hall hosts a film screening of God, Grant Me on Thursday.  Some pals of ours worked on the flick.  It's about drugs and cancer, but we hear it's funny too! And maybe sort of "meta?"  Find the FB event page here and the film's official FB page here with a full synopsis. Here's a bit of it:

"With a heavy focus on connection through flaws and finding reality through fiction, ‘god, grant me’ focuses on how the messy bits of life can lead to a deeper and more lasting revelation. Even more so than those sappy love stories."

Fall Break Picks: Royals, Rain, Comedy, and More #LFKGridlock Downtown

Mother Nature is doing her best to ruin what should have been a truly epic day in KC, with the Royals heading back to the K and a lot of folks off work for Columbus Day and ready to party.  Will the game go on?  Place your bets.

Here in LFK, it's Fall Break for KU, so the rain is no surprise. Has it ever NOT rained almost continually during Fall Break?

Luckily, the Harpoon Presents gang is hosting a big Monday evening (6-9) comedy show at the Replay to keep you amused.  Headliners Dave Ross and Zach Peterson seem to have impressive backgrounds, and plenty of your favorite LFK jokesters will get the night rolling.  Get the details here.  This one even has a nice poster.

And on Tuesday, head down to City Hall and tell the City Fathers that TWO YEARS seems too long to close down part of the 8th and NH block to aid in constructing another tall building project!  Details here.

Go Royals!

This KC weather dog is currently predicting the game will be rain-delayed but not postponed.

Weekend Picks: Comedy, Rock, and Drugs

On a week when we take a blogging break, wouldn't you know that the damn Daily Show comes to LFK to film a segment and JoCo issues a few gay marriage licenses.  What?? Maybe we should take vacations more often.

So what's up this weekend?  Let's do one pick per night.

You know the drill.  Thursday is for comedy.  We have no idea who these showcase performers are, but it's cheap and tacos are served.

Return to Replay on Friday for an I Heart Local Music showcase with a Full House poster.  Speaking of Full House, isn't it about time for the Card Table gang to launch another sitcom re-enactment?  Let's hope so.

We've sort of stopped promoting Granada shows lately since the venue annoys us, but the War on Drugs show should be cool on Saturday.   Despite the band name, we predict solid drugs at this show.  Looks like BARRR and his brothers are opening the show (though somehow we suspect it's not the BARRR we know).

THEWARONDRUGS

And what else?  Watch the Royals, dummies!!

A Royals Vacation!

What? Those lazy Royals are off until Friday?  Well, we need a break too...while we celebrate the Royals!  So we're taking a few days off as well.  It seems like a slow week in LFK anyway.  Go watch some horror movies on Tuesday at Frank's or check out J. Mascis at the Bottleneck (yes, apparently, the B-neck still books the occasional non-jamgrass show).  We'll return with weekend picks in a few days.  In the meantime, look for us hiking the rugged "Rock Chalk Park Trails" out at the controversial (but impressive) new sports complex...way, way out in WLFK.

Weekend Picks: Comedy, Zombies, TOPS, Massholes, and Beetlejuice

The Lawrence Zombie Walk has become an almost shockingly huge event.  But will the rainy weather keep the boring high-school zombies away and return the streets to the true freaks?  Let's hope so.  Starts at sundown.

Meanwhile, the jokers of Harpoon Presents will be inside the Replay, hopefully riffing on the zombies as they pass by on the street.  FB event page here

According to the music mavens at Love Garden, the TOPS show at the Replay on Friday is the place to be.  Pitchfork claims their song "Outside" "steeps itself into the wistful sentiments of soundtracks past, as if it was lost in a prom shuffle between Cyndi Lauper’s "Time After Time" and Berlin’s "Take My Breath Away".  Nice to see the LG gang getting in touch with their softer sides!   Listen here.  Damn, it IS a pretty song.

The Massholes crew is back for another round of LFK-trivia on Saturday at the Eagle's Lodge.  There will be two quizzes (7:30 at 9:00) and there will be "brownies for townies."  Weed brownies, we assume?  Don't attend unless you know shit!  Local shit.  Of course they're using the instant-classic Bob Schumm recycling photo as their FB event page cover pic.  The photo appeared here last week but we'll use it again because it's still funny.

And BARRR made a poster too:

And Liberty Hall screens Beetlejuice on Sunday.  Check out this early Burton/Keaton greatness to prepare yourself for the sure-to-be-legendary Keaton turn in Birdman, which hits theaters soon (but not soon enough).  Is there a poster for Sunday? We can't find one.  The FB event page is here.

Stuff We Like: Royals! Pelicans! Scary Movies at Frank's!

Well, for the third week in a row, we still love those Royals!  This may be the longest-ever stretch we've loved them.

After last night's epic Wild Card win, this gal deserves TWO puppies:

Some pelicans dropped by to hang out in LFK this week. That's pretty cool.  Typically excellent photo via Mike Yoder in LJ-World.

And local  horror guru Nick Spacek is celebrating October by curating a horror movie double-header every Tuesday at Frank's. (Will there be tension between horror movie fans and baseball-watchers?  We'd predict so).   The series begins next week with a double-dose of Mr. Tom Atkins in The Fog and Halloween III: Season of the Witch.  We're particularly excited about Nick's "Night of the Night Ofs," coming later in the month and showcasing Night of the Creeps and Night of the Comet.

Check out the FB event page for next week here.
